Objective:
Students will use a variety of methods to achieve a higher level of proficiency in the English language. Through the development of students; listening, speaking, grammar, reading, and writing skills students will acquire the knowledge they need to master the English language. Students will have the opportunity to share their experiences through the increased usage of their listening skills, speaking skills, development of grammar, improvement of writing abilities, and the expansion of their reading abilities.

Required school supply items (per semester):
1. Folder for notes and handouts
2. (2) standard erasers
3. Several #2 Pencils
4. A Multi-colored pack of dry erase markers per quarter
Tissues donations throughout the year are greatly appreciated.
Classroom rules and expectations: (Our Room ROCKS)
(When students are on task and completing all assignments in an orderly fashion students will have more time for activities in each class, When students are not on task and completing all assignments in an orderly fashion students will be given less activities and more quite book work).
Tardy/Absent Procedures:
When you are late for class please place your pass on Teacher’s desk, sign in, sit down, and quietly wait for instructions. I will mark you late if you are (0-9 minutes late), or absent if you are over the 10 minute limit (unless you have an excuse or a pass from the office). If tardy two or more times you will receive a referral followed by a lunch detention for each tardy. Parents will be contacted each time after your second tardy. After 10 Tardies in any class you will receive an “F” in that class.
Late work: LATE WORK Policy for my classroom:
9th grade: up to (3) days late 50% of grade.
10th grade: up to (2) days late 50% of grade.
11th grade: up to (1) day late 50% of grade.
12th grade: No late work!
If you are absent and it is an excused absence, your work will be due the day after your return, otherwise you will have one day plus the number of days you were absent to complete the assigned work. Any work not turned in within the time frame will be given an 0%=Incomplete.
Missed assignments: If you were not present for an assignment, check the “Classroom Bulletin Board” at the back of the room for a listing of what was missed. You may also ask your fellow students for assistance between classes.
Receiving Credit: In this class a grade of A or B is not obtained by simply completing an assignment. Only outstanding work earns an A. Solid competent work earns a B. Average work earns a C, and anything below average will earn a D or F (depending on the effort that was put into completing the assignment).
Graded assignments include:
Reading: Bell Work, class participation, and graphic organizers.
Grammar: Bell Work, class participation, book assignments, and activities.
Writing: Bell Work, class participation, graphic organizers, rough drafts, and final drafts of writing.
Conversation and Vocab: Bell Work, class participation, spelling sentences, and tests.
(Students are given a variety of Text Books to use throughout the year. Students will be held responsible for any loss, damaged, or stolen text books assigned to them).
You will be graded on a percentage system. Your percentage will reflect you letter grade.
Letter grades will be based on the following criteria:
90% to 100% of total points = A
80% to 89% of total points = B
70% to 79% of total points = C
60% to 69% of total points = D
Anything 59% or below = F
In the event you receive a D or F on your progress report, you and your parents should make an appointment with me to discuss your progress (phone calls and emails are welcome).
Academic Honesty/Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is to help oneself to someone else’s answers or work, to knowingly allow someone else to help himself/herself to your answers or work is also considered Plagiarism. This includes copying someone else’s answers to a worksheet or activity.
Participating in plagiarism will result in all parties involved receiving a grade of INC or F on the assignment (NO EXCEPTIONS).

- Learn the proper usage of basic to intermediate grammar techniques through the use of several grammar textbooks.
- Be given several different types of writing assignments throughout the semester. These assignments could range from a few sentences to a few paragraphs depending on students’ proficiency level.
- Be given 25 vocabulary words every two weeks to memorize, define, and use within the classroom setting.
During semester 2—Students will:
- Learn to read, comprehend, and debate several grade level textbooks and novels (appropriate to their language abilities).
- Learn the proper usage of intermediate to advanced grammar techniques through the use of several grammar textbooks.
- Be given several different types of writing assignments throughout the semester. These assignments could range from a few paragraphs to a few pages depending on students’ proficiency level.

- On time: Students are expected to be in their seats and working when the tardy bell rings.
- Respect toward others: Students are expected to respect all ideas given in class and not criticize students’ thoughts or ideas. Students are to respect others by listening quietly while thoughts and ideas are being shared.
- Respect all property: Students are expected to respect all property (school property, personal property and other’s property).
- One person excused at a time: Only one student may leave the classroom at a time.
- Come to class prepared to learn and speak English: Students are expected to arrive to class with the attitude that in order to learn English they must speak English as much as they can each and every day.
- Keep hands and feet to yourself: Students are expected to keep hands, feet, and objects to themselves while at school.
- Sharpen pencils at appropriate time: Students may sharpen pencils during non-instructional or presentation times.
